'VII' Series: PJ Darrell: 'Black (In 2020)' feat. Dedrick Hicks, Jr.

Words by PJ Darrell

““Black (In 2020)” was a concept piece that I wanted to make amid the protests for George Floyd. 2020 was a challenging year for everyone. Especially for us Black folks. I came across this picture that Dedrick Hicks, Jr. took while doing a Reduced Lunch photo shoot and it describes how I feel currently about the times that were in.”

Random related question: What’s the meaning behind ‘VII’?

When I was coming up with a name for the series, I realized that August 1st was 7 years since I transitioned from sketching to painting. The number 7 also happens to be my favorite number. Not because of it being a sign of luck, but that number always stuck with me in a way, and I’m fascinated with Roman numerals, so having it stylized like that was just the cherry on top. Basically, VII is a celebration of where I’m at currently in my craft.
